Cockatoo Island has been on my bucket list for quite some time now and when the opportunity arose for me to take a short trip to Sydney, I decided to treat my self and spend some time on this historical site.
Cockatoo Island has had a very varied history ranging from ship building, to an education facility, convict penal colony and indigenous fishing base.
As you wander the buildings you can feel the sense of history that seems to exude from the walls, it is hidden in the cracks in the old painted walls and in the pavement as you walk.
The stories are held within the shadows just waiting to show themselves through the glimmer of light that enhances particular objects that are laying dormant within its surround.
I can only imagine what life was like here for all of those that called Cockatoo Island home, for the convicts it was said to be a harsh environment but I suppose that is to be suspected of a penal colony but for those that lived in the main cottages even though it would have ben tough you could feel its charm as you wandered around the buildings and took in the sight of the harbour from the balconies and gardens of the homestead.
If you ever find your self with a bit of free time in Sydney, please take the time to visit Cockatoo Island, and if the weather is on your side, take in a trip around the harbour itself to take in its unique vista as you bask in the sunshine on the top floor of the ferry.
